DESIGN CHANGES EARLY RUN 50, 50W reels PINION GEAR DRIVE PLATE SPLINES CHANGED!
HAD THE OLDER 9 splines on the 13- pinion where it connects into the drive plate.
MODERN pinions have 8 splines on the end
MODERN drive plate assemblies like 117dn- 117dn also have 8 splines where the pinion seats
COUNT SPLINES FOR COMPATIBILITY

Most reels have probably already been changed over to newer pinion/drive plate over time with servicing, but you may run across the old ones if they haven't been touched.
IMPORTANT INFO: PENN replaced the drag washer and drive plates for the newer international series reels with a combined drive plate. Penn did not manufacture a combined drive plate specifically for the older 80, 80W, 80S or 80SW reels.
IF YOU NEED THE DRAG WASHERS for the 80, 80W, 80S or 80SW: Our parts dept. at www.mysticparts.com has found that:
The 117DN-50 drive plate works as a substitute for the 117-80 plate with 6A-50 washer used on the 80 and 80W
The 117N-80ST drive plate works as a substitute for the 117-80S plate with 6A-50 washer used on the 80S and 80SW.
The 117AN-80T drive plate works as a substitute for the 117A-80 plate with 6A-50 washer, which is used on the 80, 80W, 80S and 80SW. (The outside diameter is about 1/8" smaller but it will function).

Since you can't walk into Penn reels in Philly anymore, this is the next best thing. Thanks for your services!!!!! Even parts for vintage reels. Delivery is super quick as well.
10/23/2024 Easy to order parts and they shipped fast. Great seller! Hope to do business with them again! If you do not find what you are looking for do a Google search with Mystic Reel Parts in the search with your model. I have a Penn 285 and 9 and it took me to the exact page for both. Also have the reel schematics.

I luckily found MysticParts via a Google search. Their website is comprehensive and I was at a loss on what I needed. Fortunately the “contact us” option was user friendly. To my delight I got a personalized and VERY helpful response right away. She asked questions to fully understand my needs and then followed up with links to the right parts. We continued our email exchange regarding my second reel issue and, again, she was extremely knowledgeable and gave me both practical as well as professional solutions.
